Kathleen Rives

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kathleen Rives was diagnosed with Moebius syndrome, a rare bilateral facial paralysis. She graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana State University, earning a bachelor's degree with a double major in psychology and English. While at LSU, she joined Phi Beta Kappa and served as secretary of the LSU chapter of Psi Chi, the honors society for psychology students. Kathleen worked as a case manager for people with disabilities during the year after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast area. She then moved to San Francisco and is now enrolled in the master's program in social psychology at San Francisco State, where she serves as a graduate teaching assistant and is a project manager in the Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory. She maintains a 3.9 GPA and anticipates graduating in May 2008. Kathleen plans to pursue a career in research with an emphasis on advancing the psychological literature on facial paralysis and developing a social skills training program to facilitate social interaction for people with facial movement disorders.
