Recipient, William Randolph CSU Trustees' Awards for Outstanding Achievement
Jesus Herrera-Cortes has demonstrated a determination to improve both himself and his community throughout his life. Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, he was raised in poverty by his mother and two older sisters. In 1995 his family immigrated to the United States. Intimidated by the drastic changes in lifestyle, Jesus nevertheless had a driving motivation to adapt and learn. He adjusted to American culture while striving to excel in school. Since enrolling at Cal Poly Pomona three years ago to study urban and regional planning, he has been recognized on the Dean's List and President's List every year. He is determined to become a well-educated professional who will help improve the quality of community life through policy analysis or public administration. He has been active on campus with the American Planning Student Association and Hermanos Unidos, and volunteers at the Decisions Family Counseling Program and the Pomona Hunger Center. He is proud to keep his family values and Oaxacan heritage as an essential aspect of his identity.
