Adrianna Bayer was raised with six siblings, and her family endured both economic hardship and health problems. Since a severe speech impediment limited her ability to communicate verbally, she had to work with a therapist for 14 years to learn to speak English effectively. Despite these obstacles, Adrianna was determined to get an education. She received bachelor degrees in English and history and is working on her master's degree in English at Humboldt State. She is a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma and Alpha Chi honor societies. She volunteers in the community as a tutor with the Upward Bound program, works with disabled students, studies rural health conditions as an intern with the California Center for Rural Policy and was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship to teach English 100 this fall. Adrianna maintains a 3.99 GPA and will graduate from Humboldt State in spring 2008. Once she earns her PhD, she plans to teach college English to help others understand that they can achieve their dreams despite obstacles that seem impossible to overcome.
