Recipient, William Randolph CSU Trustees' Awards for Outstanding Achievement
Heather Matthews is a 49-year-old student in the Career Counseling Department who returned to college to pursue a master's degree after interrupting her education to raise her son. A single parent to a 17-year-old high school student, Heather graduated in 1978 from the University of Nevada, Reno with a major in education and a minor in social psychology. After an injury that caused her to leave her job as a computer analyst, she re-entered academia in 2002 at American River College where she received a 3.75 cumulative GPA, was an honor student and worked as a teaching assistant. She currently maintains a 4.0 at California State University, Sacramento. For the last three years she has participated as a parent volunteer at her son's school. Heather hopes to become a career counselor to inspire and empower people to reach their fullest potential in life.
