Students must apply through their campus Financial Aid Office in the Spring.
Financial Aid Offices on each campus review the applications to ensure that they meet all
requirements and, in consultation with the campus President, will select and forward one
nomination to the CSU Foundation. Since we had twenty-three scholarships this year,
all nominees received a scholarship.
Completed nominations submitted by the campus Financial Aid Office to the CSU Foundation
should include the following; this list is provided for reference. Students need
to apply through their campus Financial Aid Office.
- A completed Applicant Checklist
- A completed Applicant Information Form
- A Nomination Cover Letter from the campus President
- A one-paragraph Biography, which must be approved by the campus Public
Affairs Department (see Checklist)
- Calculation of Unmet Financial Need (found at the bottom of the Applicant
Information form)
- Calculation of Grade Point Average (found at the bottom of the Applicant
Information form)
- A current Official College Transcript including all undergraduate and
graduate coursework completed
- A brief Personal Statement describing the student's:
- Background
- Personal achievements
- Challenges they have encountered
- Educational pursuits
- Community service, which should reflect a commitment to education and to the community
- Goals and aspirations for the future.
- Two letters of reference from individuals such as teachers/professors,
counselors, or community leaders who can attest to the candidate's meritorious performance and
personal strengths and assess the nominee's potential for success. One of the letters
of reference must be from an academic instructor.
- A short video, approximately three minutes in length, filmed by the campus,
of the nominee describing how education has transformed his or her life, and background B-Roll of
the student on campus. These campus shots should show the student in his or her environment (the
lab, the classroom, athletic field, doing volunteer work, etc.) as well as show the student near
or in front of campus landmarks. (If the campus Public Affairs office does not have the capacity
to film the video, we ask that they determine the appropriate department and make arrangements for
the student to be filmed.) This video should be raw footage, with no scoring,
and in MINI DV, DVC PRO, or DV CAM format. We will have the editing done.
- Photos of the nominee, including a formal headshot to include in the program,
and informal shots of the nominee on campus, at home, at work, or at play. The informal photos can
come from the nominee's own collection. If the nominee does not have a formal headshot, then the
campus Public Affairs department needs to assist.
The scholarship review selection committee reviews the nominations and rates the nominees.
The highest ranked student who best demonstrates need and merit is designated the Ali C. Razi
Scholar and receives a $6,000 scholarship. The student who has contributed the most to his or
her home or university community is designated the Murray L. Galinson Scholar and receives a
$6,000 scholarship.
All recipients of the Hearst Trustees' Scholarships will be invited to attend (their transportation
will be covered) the awards presentation at the September 18, 2007, Board of Trustees
meeting at the Chancellor's Office in Long Beach. They will be honored at a reception
following the presentation. |
