About the Award
The William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement is given each year to those students who have demonstrated financial need, experienced personal hardships, and have attributes of merit, including superior academic performance, exemplary community service, and significant personal achievements.
Trustee Scholars
Two of the recipients received an additional scholarship endowed by CSU Trustee Emeriti, Dr. Ali C. Razi and Dr. Murray L. Galinson.
The Trustee Emeritus Dr. Ali C. Razi Scholar In April 2006, Dr. Ali C. Razi, Trustee Emeritus of the CSU Board of Trustees, endowed a scholarship fund to recognize the top scoring recipient of the Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award. The California State University Foundation Board of Governors honored his commitment to students by naming this outstanding individual as the Trustee Emeritus Ali C. Razi Scholar. In 2012, one exceptionally talented and dedicated student—Marilyn Thomas from San Francisco State University—received the $10,000 Razi scholarship, which is distributed due to the personal generosity of Dr. Razi. |

The Trustee Emeritus Dr. Murray L. Galinson Scholar In May 2007, Dr. Murray L. Galinson, Trustee Emeritus of the CSU Board of Trustees and Chair of the Board from 2004 to 2006, endowed a scholarship fund to recognize a Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award recipient who best exemplifies extraordinary public service to his or her home, university or global community. The California State University Foundation honored his commitment to students by naming the honored individual as the Trustee Emeritus Murray L. Galinson Scholar. This year, Maija Glasier-Lawson from CSU Chico received the $6,000 Galinson scholarship. |

The Trustee William Hauck Scholar In December 2010, Trustee William Hauck endowed a scholarship fund to recognize the William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement recipient from San José State University. The California State University Foundation Board of Governors honored his commitment to students by naming this outstanding individual as the Trustee William Hauck Scholar. This year, San José State University student Erin Enguero was awarded the Trustee William Hauck scholarship. |

The Chancellor Charles B. Reed Scholar In 2012, Dr. Charles B. Reed, Chancellor of the California State University, endowed a scholarship fund to recognize an exemplary Hearst/CSU Trustees' recipient. The California State University Foundation Board of Governors honored his commitment to students by naming this honored individual as the Chancellor Charles B. Reed Scholar. In 2012, Anthony Green from Cal Poly Pomona received the $6,000 Reed scholarship. |

The CSU Foundation Board of Governors' Scholar Sponsored by Ron R. Barhorst In 2011, the California State University Foundation board committed to enhancing the value of the William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement. Board Chair Ronald R. Barhorst generously stepped forward to inaugurate the effort with sponsorship of a CSU Foundation Board of Governors' Scholar. The scholar exemplifies significant achievement both academically and in service to community. In 2012, Beatriz Alcazar from Sonoma State University received the $6,000 CSU Foundation Board of Governors' scholarship in recognition of exemplary academic achievement and commitment to community service. |

The Southwest Airlines Scholar In 2012, California State University Foundation board member and Southwest Airlines Community Affairs and Grassroots Manager Lidia S. Martinez committed support from Southwest Airlines for outstanding achievement by a first-generation Hearst/CSU Trustees' student. This year, Cassandra Cook from San Diego State University was awarded the $6,000 Southwest Airlines scholarship. |
