Es el Momento Draws Crowd of 27,000 to CSU Dominguez Hills

Organized by Univision in partnership with the California State University and many other education and nonprofit organizations, Es el Momento Education Fair was held on Oct. 9 to inform Spanish-speaking parents about California's education system.

The event's name states in Spanish, “The Time is Now."

CSU Presidents Attend White House Signing of Executive Order on Hispanic Education

Four California State University presidents joined President Barack Obama during the signing on Oct. 19 of an executive order to renew and enhance the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

Presidents Mildred Garcia, CSU Dominguez Hills; King Alexander, Cal State Long Beach; Milton Gordon, Cal State Fullerton, and Al Karnig, CSU San Bernardino, were present during the signing of the reauthorization of the national initiative that supports educational opportunities for Latino students.

Super Sundays All Year Long

Stephen Weber president CSUSDStephen L. Weber, president at San Diego State University, spoke at several African American churches around San Diego during October to highlight the CSU application period that extends from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30. Weber will continue these speaking engagements through November. Most recently he spoke at North Park Apostolic Church.

Speaking at predominantly African American churches is part of the CSU statewide community education program called Super Sunday.

CSU Priority Enrollment Period Closes Nov. 30 at midnight

Application PeriodStudents intending to enter a CSU campus in fall 2011 must apply by midnight on Nov. 30, 2010.

Student applications received after the closure of the priority application period will be subject to space availability.

Asian Community Leaders Discuss Strategies to Reach Out to Families

A group of 30 Asian, Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian community leaders met at the CSU Chancellor's office on Oct. 19 to discuss creation of a partnership to bring college information to Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian families and students who need help to get to higher education.

Fong and Calvin ChangTargeted students in this initiative have been identified based on data from the Early Assessment Test.

CSU Delivers College Message to Taste of Soul Festival Attendees
CSU Fullerton booth at Taste of Soul FestivalCalifornia State University staff and church education volunteers delivered college information materials to the Taste of Soul Festival participants on Oct. 16 in South Los Angeles. The event drew more than 100,000 visitors.

The Latino Institute for Corporate Inclusion (LICI) convened Bay Area executives from the private and public sectors on Oct. 26 at San Francisco State University, Downtown Campus. The gathering included the LICI Distinguished Lecture Series featuring Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, director of UCLA’s Center for the Study of Latino Health & Culture, and Mildred Garcia, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, who also oversees Hispanic Initiatives for the CSU. The event was co-sponsored by the CSU and at&t.
