CSU Student Fees and Other Costs



In the 2007-2008 Academic Year, students who are classified as residents pay fees based upon whether they are full or part-time students and, to some degree, which campus they are attending. Part-time undergraduate students (taking up to 6 units) pay a State University Fee of $1,608 per academic year. Full-time students (taking 6.1 units or more) pay a State University Fee of $2,772. In addition, students normally pay campus-based fees (for the student association, health fees, and other services) which currently average $749.

Other charges may be applicable, such as: application fee, graduation & diploma fee, transcript fee, parking fee, summer session & extension fees, dormitory fees, late registration fee, catalog fee, I.D. card fee, and miscellaneous fees for courses not fully funded out of operating expense (e.g., lab, field trips, art materials, instrument fees).

Credential program students pay a State University Fee of $1,866 (part-time) or $3,216 (full-time); graduate students pay a State University Fee of $1,980 (part-time) or $3,414 (full-time). Participants in the new doctoral program would pay a fee of $7,440. With the addition of campus fees, a full-time credential program student would thus pay an average total of $3,965, a full-time graduate student would pay an average total of $4,163, and doctoral student would pay an average total of $8,189.

In addition to the State University Fee and applicable campus fees, out-of-state and foreign students also pay tuition of $226 per quarter unit or $339 per semester unit. A non-resident student taking 15 units per term would pay tuition of $10,170 per academic year, bringing the average total for a full-time non-resident student to $13,691.

Other Student Costs (estimated)

The total cost of attending the California State University is based upon the student's academic program, where the student will live, the student's marital status, and the location of the campus the student will attend. The most recent estimate of the average expenses for single students for one academic year follow.

For all students, books and supplies will run about $1,351. Students living at home and commuting will have meals and housing expenses of about $3,472, transportation costs of about $1,120, and personal expenses of about $2,357. Students living in campus housing will have average expenses of $9,042 for meals and housing, $1,027 for transportation, and $2,298 for miscellaneous personal expenses. Students living away from home/off-campus should expect to pay about $9,492 for meals and housing, $1,153 for transportation, and $2,399 for miscellaneous personal expenses.
