ERWC Workshop Description

The ERWC workshop is intended for English teachers as an introduction to the materials contained in the CSU Expository Reading and Writing Course. In many locations, the first two days of the workshop are conducted at CSU campuses in the summer or early fall, with the third day in later fall and the fourth day in the spring. Aligned with the English-Language Arts Content Standards, the ERWC emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. These rich, adaptable resources, developed by a collaborative group of CSU and high school faculty and specialists, are designed to help students develop the academic literacy skills necessary for success in college and the world of work. Schools may adopt the course as a junior or senior English course; the course may be adopted as a one semester course or as a yearlong course. Alternatively schools may integrate course modules within existing English courses at the 11th and 12th grades or within AVID courses. Teachers attending this workshop will receive both professional development and resources:

  • Course materials and other professional books
  • Lessons for preparing students meet expectations in college-level classes
  • Strategies for helping students read and write rhetorically
  • An opportunity to calibrate school-level expectations with college-level expectations
