As a result of the CSU's emphasis on community service learning, nearly half of CSU's 400,000
students are at work locally - bringing tutoring, civic outreach, and other service
contributions to their neighbors.
12/21/2004: Community Service Learning Milestones
More than 185,000 California State University students provided nearly 30 million hours of
service to their communities during the last academic year through community service and
service learning programs at the 23 CSU campuses. This article also appeared in the

5/29/2003: Over 1,000 CSU Students Graduate From A
Year of Service
As the CSU prepares to recognize thousands of graduating students at commencement ceremonies,
it will also honor over 1000 CSU students who have served a year of service in eight CSU
AmeriCorps programs.
1/18/2001: CSU Wins National Community Service Award
The California State University is one of seven institutions in the nation and the only
California institution to win the Higher Education Award for Leadership in National Service,
the Corporation for National Service announced today.
6/14/2000: CSU Receives Getty and AmeriCorps'
Grants totaling up to $1.5 Million for Service Learning.
The California State University has received two grants totaling nearly $1.5 million from
AmeriCorps and the Getty Grant Program to support service-learning programs, in which students
learn from community service experiences directly tied to the academic content of their
courses.
4/26/2000: USA Weekend Honors CSU For Community Service Activities
USA Weekend, a Gannett Company magazine with a circulation of 42 million, has honored the
California State University with a California regional award for the system's community
service activities on National Make a Difference Day 1999. Only two awards are given in every
state.
