About the Conference
Keynote Address by: Roberto Ibarra, University of New Mexico
The 2nd Annual CSU Conference on Community-Based Teaching and Research is
designed to bring together California State University faculty, advanced students, and
community partners involved in service learning, community based research, and other forms
of scholarship and creative activity, to enhance our research skills, collaborations, and
community partnerships in promoting civic engagement and social change.
The conference theme this year is Diversity in California. California is now one
of four states designated majority-minority by the U.S. Census Bureau, with 56% of the
general population now minority (non-white)1. These profound demographic shifts
create new challenges and opportunities for the state in almost every arena from education
to health care to economic development in which the CSU is deeply involved.
The Conference will provide an opportunity for both novice and experienced community
scholars to discuss research methods and results related to the diversity theme and other
topics, to build multi-campus and interdisciplinary collaborations, and to share lessons
learned in addressing critical challenges in working with the many diverse communities of
California and beyond.
Conference Goals
- Deepen understanding of research on service learning pedagogy and other forms of
engagement related to the diversity theme and other topics
- Develop technical skills as researchers
- Build research collaborations across campuses
- Expand skills and knowledge in working with diverse students, faculty, and
communities
Conference Themes
- research on engaged pedagogies (e.g. service learning and civic engagement impact on
students, curriculum, and/or institutions);
- research and other forms of scholarship to address specific community needs (e.g.
health disparity issues, building multicultural competencies);
- research methods involving faculty, students, and community (e.g.
ethnographic methods, participatory action research, involving students in community based
research).
