Judy joined the Office of Community Service Learning in CSU Chancellor's Office in September 2002. Her work in the Chancellor's Office allows Judy to combine her many interests and passions, including continuing her advocacy work on behalf of students, and helping to secure resources for CSU campuses to continue to engage and expand their partnerships with California's communities.

Judy's advocacy for the importance of infusing service learning in academia stems from her undergraduate years at Simmons College in Boston, MA where she was actively involved in community service and civic engagement work. In 1996, as an intern with the Massachusetts Campus Compact, a pivotal moment changed the course and direction of her work - she recognized the importance of student advocacy in the service-learning movement and saw that there was a significant lack of understanding and participation from students themselves. As a result, Judy began to inform higher education administrators and legislators about the enormous impact that college students have on their communities.

After graduating from Simmons College with a BA in Economics, she served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA with Massachusetts Campus Compact for two years. She then moved out to California to become the Director of the Center for Volunteerism and Community Service at Occidental College. There she managed 5 grant programs totaling $205,000, secured additional funding to support new and existing programs, supervised 19 student-led community service programs, managed a student staff of 45, and was responsible for the overall office systems and environment. Prior to coming to the Chancellor's Office, Judy served as the GEAR UP Coordinator at Washington Irving Middle School in Los Angeles, coordinating an after-school and weekend tutoring program, and organizing parent workshops including a variety of college and career events.

Judy's other passions include diving into a good book or diving into an outdoor sport, which these days mean that you can find her catching waves on her surfboard.
