COAST Networks: Marine Ecosystem Dynamics

Some of the most critical issues we face relate to how marine populations respond to changes in climate and habitat availability and quality, and we need to be able to distinguish natural, cyclic changes from those caused by human influence. Field and laboratory studies are necessary to determine the short and long term responses of marine organisms, populations, and communities to various environmental changes. This Network will engage in research and monitoring to assess how organisms use and interact with their environment and how human activity impacts ecosystems. The results will help resource managers develop and implement ecosystem-based management strategies for sustainable use of natural marine resources.
