Below is a brief overview of the 2016-2017 VISTA positions and projects.

The goal is to ensure that undocumented students can access and succeed in high impact educational experiences and achieve their personal and professional goals. By building and enhancing partnerships on-campus, in our region and state, and across the nation, the VISTA will create lasting change for undocumented students in STEM fields.

Project Description: The VISTA serving in Chico State’s College of Natural Sciences (NSC) is helping advance our STEM education initiatives, including the implementation of the Chico STEM Connections Collaborative, a recently awarded HSI STEM grant. CSC˛ includes projects that encompass the critical needs and transition points for Hispanic low-income students. Read more»

The VISTA will also contribute to the development of the new NSC STEM Learning Center, design innovative STEM Success Workshops, and implement an annual STEM Symposium. The VISTA will implement programs focused on supporting students in 1) navigating university bureaucracy and complexity, 2) resisting the second through fourth-year “sophomore slump”, and 3) building confidence in communicating with administrators and faculty.

The VISTA members at San Jose State University’s Jay Pinson STEM Education program will help prepare educators to effectively teach STEM and CS, develop innovative and engaging curricula, and implement K-12 programs that address science and computing education. They will also co-teach profession development sessions and provide ongoing support to K-12 teachers.

Center for Community Based Learning

Project Description: Service Learning allows students to engage more deeply in their coursework and inspires them to make change in their community. The VISTA serving with HSU’s Center for Community Based Learning aims to increase the visibility and effectiveness of service learning and career development in the College of Natural Resources and Sciences (CNRS). The VISTA member will have two primary roles, (1) expand connections to community partners and prospective employers by coordinating various events, info sessions, and industry panels, and (2) conduct research on Service Learning and career education to assist faculty in developing assignments and promoting best practices.

Dream Success Center

Project Description: At the CSULB Dream Success Center, the VISTA will empower scholars who are undocumented in their pursuit of higher education and foster a supportive campus community dedicated to their educational and personal success. Read more.»

To best serve students, the VISTA will work to identify the needs and interests of undocumented students in STEM. Attention will be directed to building collaborative partnerships with faculty and staff will begin to bridge services across campus. The VISTA will also develop workshops and programming for undocumented students in STEM which will provide them with opportunities to expand their academic and professional experience in their field.

Food Pantry

Project Description: The VISTA will help students at CSU Bakersfield access the newly formed food pantry who’s mission to alleviate food insecurity and to create experiential STEM learning opportunities. Read more.»

The pantry will include student-designed virtual shopping and energy efficiency technologies and will continuously engage students in the latest research, by incorporating their newest, relevant technological developments. The VISTA will work with CSUB STEM faculty to provide research opportunities to students. The VISTA will also develop operations to sustain the pantry, and facilitate it as a living lab for faculty to develop co-curricular learning that encompasses the new campus-wide, general education course: Quality of Life; Revolutionary Ideas and Innovations; and Sustainability and Justice.

Project Description: The VISTA serving at CSU San Marcos will work within a pilot program designed to reduce stereotype threat and close the achievement gap for STEM students. This will be accomplished by deepening connections to other academic resources on campus and creating meaningful activities. Read more.»

The VISTA will use a lens of inclusivity and equity to create activities to support students’ abilities to navigate their academic and career goals and their course readiness and mastery. The VISTA will also provide online resources for students who struggle to participate in activities that occur during the day.

Project Description: Internship opportunities are hard to come by. The VISTA serving with CSU Monterey Bay’s Science Internship Program (SIP) helps connect students in the School of Natural Sciences with critical resources and services to engage in meaningful internship opportunities. Read more.»

They will design and implement new ways to engage lower division students in internships and other forms of experiential learning. The VISTA will strive to increase awareness of careers in students’ field of interest, help create connections between students’ coursework and careers, and grow participation for traditionally underrepresented students in career exploration and science internship opportunities.

Project Description: The VISTA serving with SDSU’s College of Science Advising Center will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and student support programs across campus to ensure academic success for STEM students from all backgrounds. Read more.»

The VISTA will also work with the College of Science Director of Advising to develop, implement, and evaluate STEM curriculum (i.e. workshops, trainings, and other programming). The curriculum will continue to help foster an inclusive environment conducive to safe and welcoming exploration of STEM careers and navigating through each student’s educational journey at SDSU and beyond. Additionally, the VISTA will help evaluate the STEM start summer bridge program.

Commit to Study

Project Description: The VISTA will be involved in enhancing the training of peer ambassadors to develop mentoring and classroom management skills. This will empower peer mentors as they guide other students in time-management, avoiding procrastination, note-taking, and much more. Read more.»

The VISTA will also be involved in grant writing, program networking, web-design, data analysis, training and workshop development, and mentor supervising. The VISTA will also design and develop a Commit to Study seminar, which will be a weekly, 50-minute credit/no credit course to better retain mentees. Additionally, the VISTA member will enhance the social media presence by launching a “Perseverance Campaign” to create a campus culture around perseverance despite failure.

Fabrications Laboratory (Fab Lab)

Project Description: CSU Bakersfield (CSUB) is in a unique position with an on-campus digital fabrication and rapid prototyping lab, known as the Fab Lab. This lab has a number of computer controlled fabrication machines like 3-D printers, vinyl and wood cutters, and etching machines. The VISTA member will support K-12 teachers on ways to engage K-12 students in the engineering design process and digital fabrication. Read more.»

The VISTA will also work to translate Fab Lab activities into Next Generation Science Standards, create “Make in a Box” kits, and assist community partners in developing maker spaces for educational outreach.

Program for Engineering Excellence for Partner Schools (PEEPS)

Project Description: The VISTA serving with Cal Poly SLO’s College of Engineering will support Cal Poly Engineering and K-14 students. The VISTAs role is to strengthen and build sustainability into outreach and student success programs. Read more.»

Several projects include STEM outreach, student success program assessment, diversity and inclusivity professional development workshops, and building partnerships. This VISTA project will also address the culture within Cal Poly’s College of Engineering by facilitating discussion across different student groups, faculty, and staff, and by helping to examine cultures of STEM knowledge production through the experiences and perspectives of undergraduate students from marginalized standpoints.

Project Description: At Stan State, the VISTA member will collaboratively coordinate and design programs for K-12 students on campus, and foster a leadership in CSU STEM students, the STEM Ambassadors. Read more.»

The VISTA will recruit and prepare university students for the STEM Ambassador program who will then work with local, underserved K-12 students, bring together faculty and ambassadors to put on programs such as: Science Saturdays, Junior Scientist, Science Day, and Delhi Science Academy. The VISTA will also meet with regional STEM partnerships, such as the National Ag Science Center, to develop programs that engage underserved youth in STEM activities.

Edible Garden

Project Description: The 1.75-acre Edible Garden at CSUB will help alleviate food insecurity and create experiential STEM learning opportunities. The VISTA will connect CSUB students, K-14 students, and community members with local, healthy, fresh produce they can grow, research, harvest, and cook. Read more.»

The VISTA will also support the sustainability of the garden, and facilitate it as a living lab for faculty to develop co-curricular learning. The VISTA will also coordinate the outdoor kitchen which will provide space for cooking workshops by professional and student chefs to teach students and community members how to prepare produce grown in the garden.

Project Description: Fresno State’s College of Science and Math is committed to student success, and has a track record of increasing our students’ socioeconomic mobility. The VISTA will be focused on building capacity and helping institutionalize ongoing First Year Experience (CSM-FYE) efforts, and increase the learning outcomes of the students involved. Read more.»

The work will focus on aiding the university in adopting a peer mentoring program for all freshmen; tracking and monitoring the program’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year cohorts; and facilitating the adoption of systems to ensure that our students are enrolling in the proper courses for timely degree completion.

The VISTA will 1) work to improve two existing learning communities, Klamath Connection and Stars to Rocks, and standardize the design of their components to inform the creation of additional learning communities and 2) build capacity for STEM transfer student support.
