STEM Engaged Learning
Personal Statement from Kristina Barger, VISTA Program Manager

I served two terms as a Massachusetts Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA member in Boston, following my graduation from CSU Chico. My project at Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology focused on college access and success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). I had the great fortune to design student involvement and leadership programs, train and support faculty in designing and implementing service learning curricula, and develop long-lasting community partnerships.

During my AmeriCorps*VISTA experience, I fell in love with community empowerment and higher education, which led me to my current position with CSU STEM VISTA. Besides being personally and professional rewarding, AmeriCorps*VISTA helped me develop career-ready skills, explore my passions and discover new ones. I started out wanting to serve my community and my country, and found myself embracing a life path. You never know where a VISTA year can take you.
