Participation in the Keck STEM SL Study

CSU campuses with STEM service-learning courses and using the CalSate S4 database are eligible to participate in the study.

For information about participating in this research project, please review the information below and complete the online Interest Form. 


For the purposes of the Keck STEM Service-Learning Research Study, STEM disciplines include:

  • Computer Science
  • Construction Management
  • Earth & Space
  • Engineering
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • STEM Education and Learning Research/Instructional Technology

Campus expectations for participation:

  • Campus MOU Deadline: prior to start of classes
  • Implement the CalState S4 Database; and
  • Provide data on participating students

How will my campus benefit from participating in this study?

  • Participating STEM faculty members receive a stipend per STEM SL course in research study
  • Campus receive a cost-reduction for CalState S4 database, each year in the study
  • Participating Institutional Research Offices receive mini-grant
  • Students are eligible for incentives consisting of a range in gift card amounts
  • Campuses receive individualized report on student achievement and attitudes related to service learning and civic engagement

How do faculty and students participate in the study? 

  • Faculty members complete an online surveys, logs and submit course syllabi. (additional information is provided in the Faculty MOU)
  • Students complete online surveys.
  • Students and faculty will use the new CalState S4 Database.
