Service-Learning Policy at San Diego State University
Service-learning pedagogy provides structured opportunities for
students to learn and develop through active participation and thoughtfully-organized
involvement that:
- Is conducted in the community and meets the needs of the students,
faculty, and community partners
- Is integrated into and enhances the academic experience of students
by relating academic content and course objectives to issues in
the community,
- Fosters civic responsibility, and
- Integrates effective assessment and student reflection on the
interrelationships between course content, concepts, and objectives
and community-based learning activities.
Service-Learning Activities shall:
a) be a component of a university course and be described in the
syllabus; credit shall be granted only for activities so described
and approved by the instructor in advance;
b) integrate community and classroom learning;
c) meet community needs and be identified in conjunction with community
organizations;
d) provide structured opportunities, including writing assignments,
for students to reflect on the connections between their service
experiences and course objectives;
e) be evaluated on the student's ability to integrate the academic
and community experience, not merely on performance of community
activities;
f) be appropriate to the student's academic preparation;
g) take place only at service sites evaluated and approved by the
course instructor;
h) be evaluated by the student, community partner and the instructor |
