Service-Learning Policy at San Diego State University

Service-learning pedagogy provides structured opportunities for students to learn and develop through active participation and thoughtfully-organized involvement that:

  • Is conducted in the community and meets the needs of the students, faculty, and community partners
  • Is integrated into and enhances the academic experience of students by relating academic content and course objectives to issues in the community,
  • Fosters civic responsibility, and
  • Integrates effective assessment and student reflection on the interrelationships between course content, concepts, and objectives and community-based learning activities.

Service-Learning Activities shall:

a) be a component of a university course and be described in the syllabus; credit shall be granted only for activities so described and approved by the instructor in advance;
b) integrate community and classroom learning;
c) meet community needs and be identified in conjunction with community organizations;
d) provide structured opportunities, including writing assignments, for students to reflect on the connections between their service experiences and course objectives;
e) be evaluated on the student's ability to integrate the academic and community experience, not merely on performance of community activities;
f) be appropriate to the student's academic preparation;
g) take place only at service sites evaluated and approved by the course instructor;
h) be evaluated by the student, community partner and the instructor
