Excerpt from the Service-Learning Policy passed by the Academic
Senate and signed by the president:
Any course pedagogy that meets the following criteria as affirmed
by the offering department may be designated in the Schedule and
Directory and on official transcripts as having a Service Learning
Component.
To be designated as a service-learning course in the university
class schedule and directory and on a student’s transcript
and for administrative purposes, the course shall:
- be a component of a university course and be described in
the syllabus;
- integrate community issues and classroom learning;
- include preparation of students for the community environment
such as tours, presentations, and/or readings;
- provide structured opportunities, such as writing assignments
and group discussion, for students to reflect on the connections
between their service experience and course objectives;
- include an assessment of student ability to integrate the
academic and community experience;
- take place at sites evaluated and approved by the course instructor
in partnership with the community;
- be evaluated by the student, community partner, and the instructor.
The service learning component and its relative weight in the final
course grade will be explicitly listed in a course syllabus of a
course using a service learning pedagogy.
Process: Instructors wishing to have their course
designated as “service-learning” should complete the
Request for Service Learning Designation form and secure the signatures
of their Department Chair and Dean. Signed forms should be submitted
to the Center for Community Service-Learning (CCS-L) by the appropriate
date. |
