Community Service-Learning Course Designation Policy
The CSUDH Office of Community Service Learning is committed to
providing and facilitating opportunities for students to integrate
academic study with active participation in community programs that
address the needs and interests of the Los Angeles region.
As approved by the Academic Senate Executive Committee (Spring,
2003), a community service-learning course at CSUDH is defined as
“A course that incorporates at least 15 hours of course-related
community service with reflection activities to enhance students’
understanding of course content, self-awareness, and civic engagement.”
The Scheduling Office has arranged for community service-learning
course sections to be identified in course schedules with the footnote
“26,” which informs students of designated service-learning
courses and facilitates identification of service-learning courses
in the APDB report to the Chancellor’s office.
Instructors intending to conduct courses meeting the definition
of a “community service-learning course” as stated are
advised to inform their department support so that the designation
can be included in the course database. Alternatively, instructors
may contact the Office of Community Service-Learning at (310)243-2438
for inclusion.
Instructors are also advised to contact the Office of Community
Service-Learning for purposes of course collaboration, faculty development
opportunities, student development opportunities, community agency
networking, and to ensure that their course fully meets the definition
of a “community service-learning course.” |
