AAC&U Conference
on Civic Engagement |
The
Association of American Colleges and Universities
(AAC&U) has become one of the chief national
associations offering conferences supporting civic
engagement. Their recent conference, The
Civic Engagement Imperative: Student Learning and
the Public Good, held November 10-12, 2005
in Providence, Rhode Island, featured workshops
on documenting the scholarship of engagement, enhancing
critical reflection, and clarifying the meaning
of civic engagement as an outcome of college. Several
CSU representatives presented. Below is one highlight:
- Judy Botelho, Assistant Director of Community
Service Learning, joined Don Coan of Survey
Research Consulting in a presentation, Multi-method
Approaches to Assessing Civic Engagement Outcomes,
describing the development of two new
assessment tools.

Continuums of Service
Conference - Call for Proposals |
The 9th Annual Continuums of
Service Conference will take place April 19-21,
2006 in Bellevue, Washington. This year’s
conference, Engaging Leadership: New Visions,
Voices, and Models, will bring together
500 colleagues to explore multiple perspectives
on leadership, service learning, and civic engagement
and share program models.
You can submit a proposal around the conference
theme and learn about other ways to participate
by visiting the conference’s
website. The deadline to submit a proposal
is Friday, January 13, 2006. Registration will
begin in January.

| CSU Conference on Community-Based
Teaching and Research
Registration
is now open for the first CSU Conference on Community-Based
Teaching and Research, which will be held March 3-4,
2006, at Cal Poly Pomona. This is the first conference
of its kind in the CSU. The conference will bring together
service-learning practitioners and community-based researchers
to share and discuss research methods and results, build
multi-campus and interdisciplinary collaborations, and
share lessons learned from challenges faced while working
with communities in California and beyond.
Some highlights of the conference format:
- The first day of the conference will include five
skill-building workshops in parallel.
- The keynote address will be delivered by Randy Stoecker,
author of Research Methods for Community Change,
who will speak on, Why Don't We Do More Participatory
Research?
- On the second day, more than 60 CSU faculty and
partners have been selected to participate in panels
along four conference tracks: student learning outcomes,
community impacts, teacher preparation, and issues
of social justice.
With nearly 200 CSU faculty expected to attend, the
conference will be an excellent opportunity for professional
development and for developing statewide collaborations.

International Conference on Service Learning Research
The 5th Annual International
Conference on Service Learning Research was held
in East Lansing, Michigan. The conference featured presentations
from countries as distant as Argentina and South Africa.
The CSU was represented by two presentations:
- San José State faculty Debra David and Amy
Strage presented, Assessing a Community-University
Partnership: The CommUniverCity Collaborative,
a description of the design of an assessment plan
for a community-university-city partnership created
to match service-learning students with priorities
identified by residents of a highly diverse, economically
disadvantaged neighborhood.
- Ana Garcia-Nevarez, from Sacramento State joined
Amy Strage to present their early results of a multi-campus
study conducted with Kari Knutson-Miller from CSU
Fullerton on Factors Influencing Preservice Teachers'
Career Commitment and Attitudes Toward Diversity Across
Multiple Service-Learning Experiences.
The keynote speaker, Rick Battistoni, Professor of
Political Science, Providence College, spoke on Approaching
Democratic Engagement: Research Findings on Civic Learning
and Civic Practice. Next year’s conference
will be held at Portland State University in Fall 2006.
