Co-sponsored by the CSU Chancellor's Center for Community Engagement and The Institute for Teaching and Learning

Friday, March 7 - Saturday, March 8, 2008
Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel

The CSU Conference on Community Based Teaching and Research is designed to bring together California State University faculty and advanced students involved in service learning and community based research to enhance our research skills, collaborations, and community partnerships in promoting community engagement that addresses significant social needs.

The Conference will provide an opportunity for both novice and experienced community scholars to discuss research methods and results, to build multi-campus and interdisciplinary collaborations, and to share lessons learned in addressing critical challenges in working with communities in California and beyond.

The primary goals of the conference are to:

  • Expand skills and knowledge of community based participatory research
  • Deepen understanding of research on service-learning pedagogy and other forms of engagement
  • Develop technical skills of researchers
  • Build research collaborations across campuses

The influence of globalization is being widely felt in world economies, social networks, and our educational systems. The theme for this year's conference reflects how the blurring of boundaries and borders between people is affecting many aspects of higher education including student learning, curriculum, faculty research and institutional missions. During this CSU conference, the "from local to global perspectives" lens will be used to learn about the interdependent connection between local efforts, national priorities, and ultimately, our global environment from the wide-ranging efforts of our faculty, students, and community partners.
