Sonoma: Student Teachers Bring Service Learning to School

Sonoma

As part of a year-long program that required full-time student teaching, credential students placed in elementary schools created a service-learning project for their elementary school classes. The project allowed credential and elementary students to solve a problem together and make a change. One student teacher, concerned when a few of her second graders complained about not having a playmate during recess, brought it to the class. Working together, the children painted a colorful “friendship bench” where classmates without a playmate could sit for other students to invite them to play. Another credential candidate whose class learned about endangered species asked the students to learn how to make a difference by writing letters to the President.
