The Seamless Transition Project is a cooperative effort among
Tennyson High School (Hayward, CA), the Hayward Unified School
District, California State University-East Bay, Chabot Community
College, Rohm and Haas (a chemical manufacturing business),
and Students in Business (a nonprofit organization). The Seamless
Transition Project will improve the academic readiness and motivation
of students at Tennyson High School, 45% of whom live below
the poverty line. The goal of the project is to increase the
number of Tennyson students who are admitted to four-year colleges.
The project will have both curricular and support components.
The curricular focus will be in two areas: (1) problem solving
in mathematics and (2) essay writing. 100 students each year
will take part in project activities, most notably revised
courses that require students to solve mathematical problems
and write essays in real-world situations related to a variety
of careers. The support component includes tutoring by former
Tennyson students now enrolled at Cal State East Bay and mentoring
by members of local businesses. Students participating in
the Project will enroll in a special college preparation course
while their parents will participate in a parent education
program.
