Faculty Research Fellows Program, $104,000
The Center for California Studies also administers the Faculty Research Fellows Program for the assembly, the
governor, and the senate offices. Since 1994/95, the considerable faculty and staff resources of the CSU have
been made accessible to either the executive or legislative branches of California state government through
the Faculty Research Fellows Program.
The Faculty Research Fellows Program provides for directed faculty and staff research including papers
requested by the legislature and/or executive branch agencies, and organizing and participating in
conferences, seminars, symposiums, and similar public services activities. The direct costs of administering
the Faculty Research Fellows Program are grants awarded to the researching faculty or staff. The budget also
includes operating expenses to cover the cost of administering the program and publishing research results.
In fiscal year 2002/03, the Center received $108,000 in its budget appropriation for the Faculty Research
Fellows Program. The assembly, senate, and the governorís office were each allocated $30,000 in research funds, with $18,000 held for administrative costs such as publishing completed reports and support for the
program coordinator. In 2003/04, the Center for California Studies received a 10 percent budget cut, which
consequently decreased the amount appropriated to the Faculty Research Fellows Program. For budget
year 2008/09, the CSU is requesting that $6,000 of the Compact increase be allocated to the Faculty Fellows
Research Program. This increase will, just about, return it to pre-cut levels.
