Teacher Recruitment Project
(Teacher Diversity)

Program Description

The goal of the Teacher Recruitment Project (TRP) is to attract education paraprofessionals from K-12 schools who are interested in pursuing a teaching career, as well as secondary school students and community college students from environments in which teaching has not been a common career goal, and help them succeed in qualifying for entrance to the teaching profession. This program seeks to make California's teaching workforce more inclusive.

The Teacher Recruitment Project designed by each campus corresponds to unique regional characteristics, targets multiple audiences, and includes strategies which have proven successful in recruiting diverse students to teaching. Strategies employed range from the provision of academic support and academic advisement to exposure to teaching and career counseling. These projects are intersegmental and involve local districts and community colleges.

Campus Allocations

Campus allocations for 1997/98 are shown in the section entitled 1997/98 Lottery Budget Allocations. The allocations are based on a fixed amount for each campus, to a maximum of $75,000. Allocations will be made to the Supplies and Services line-item allotment. Campuses should transfer funds to budget lines appropriate for implementation of project activities.

Program Guidelines

Expenditures of these funds are to support campus-developed activities to increase the pool of individuals entering and completing teaching credential programs. Expenditures must conform to all regulations governing lottery revenues. The funds are to be expended before June 30, 1998.

Program Reports

Campuses are requested to submit two copies of a year-end report following the format on the next page. This report should be submitted on or before August 15 of each fiscal year. The report should be sent to the office of Dr. Beverly Young, Associate Director of Teacher Education and K-18 Programs. Questions regarding this program may also be directed to Dr. Young at (562) 985-2847.
