Charts and Graphs
Charts and graphs should be simple and well arranged to quickly and easily relate data. Here are some basic guidelines for preparing charts and graphs:

  • Avoid artful effects, such as drop shadows or multiple colors, which get in the way of the viewer understanding the data.
  • Eliminate elements that are not directly related to the data.
  • Use colors from the CSU color palette.
  • Use variations of a single color to show differentiation, rather than a wide assortment of colors.
  • Do not use patterned fills such as cross-hatching—these can be distracting.
  • Mute or eliminate grids.
