Chancellor's Report

to the Board of Trustees

November 9, 2005

Thank you, Chair Galinson.

I'd like to begin with a brief update on one of our upcoming searches: We are launching a search for a new Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer to fill the position that Dave Spence left earlier this year.

We hope to get back to the board during the January meeting with a recommendation.

Budget/Ed.D.

September and October were extremely busy months and we have had a lot on our plates since the last regular meeting.

Last month we approved a 2006/07 budget plan and we reviewed our long-term goals for improving employee compensation.

We have heard a lot of discussion about the student fee increases. I know that the student fee report we heard yesterday is able to put some of these issues into perspective.

In September, as Chair Galinson mentioned, the governor signed one of our most important bills to date, the Ed.D. bill. This legislation will make probably the most significant change in the CSU's mission in the past 40 years.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to recognize Senator Jack Scott for his leadership and hard work on this important legislation. We are committed to fulfilling our responsibilities to California's public education system, and we are working hard to establish high-quality educational doctorate programs that are accessible to all who seek them.

Communications and Advocacy

Also this fall we have been extremely busy with events related to the CSU's impact report and our communications and advocacy plan:

  • In September, we held a forum and discussion with Vietnamese community leaders in Garden Grove about helping more Vietnamese students become eligible for and succeed in college;

  • Last week we held a forum and discussion with the African-American community in Oakland on a similar topic;

  • Also last week we held a follow-up meeting to our entertainment industry event with the CSU deans and faculty to discuss the needs of the entertainment industry.

  • Two weeks ago we held a major event in San Jose with leaders of the engineering community to discuss the CSU's impact on the engineering industry and to talk about how we can recruit more students, particularly minorities and women, into the field.

We are committed to following through on each of these events, and to building meaningful partnerships with each of our critical industries and target audiences.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Fresno State President John Welty, who is about to begin his term as chair of the AASCU Board of Directors. Cal State Northridge President Jolene Koester is also on that board.

Also congratulations to the CSU women's NCAA Division II volleyball teams. Currently, four out of the top five teams in the Pacific Region are CSU campuses:

  • Cal State L.A. is ranked at number one;
  • Cal Poly Pomona is at number two;
  • Cal State Bakersfield is at number four;
  • Cal State San Bernardino is at number five.

Chair Galinson, that concludes my report.
