Chancellor's Report to the Board of Trustees May 11, 2005 Thank you, Chair Galinson. This is the time of year when we have many farewells to say and thanks to give for everyone who worked very hard in key leadership positions during the academic year. Thanks to:
Last night we said farewells to Presidents Marvalene Hughes and Peter Smith and to Executive Vice Chancellor Dave Spence. We thanked them for their leadership and contributions. We will honor our outgoing trustees in July. I also want to give a warm welcome to Don Kassing, whom we just appointed our permanent president at San Jose State. Don, it has been a pleasure to work with you, and we are extremely grateful that you have agreed to stay and serve the campus. Interim President for CSUMB As we continue our presidential searches, we want to ensure that we get the very best pool of candidates for every position. That is why we have decided to name an interim president for CSU Monterey Bay. I have asked Diane Cordero de Noriega, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Monterey Bay, to serve as interim president. I know she will be extremely effective in this position. CSU Budget At this stage in the budget process we are waiting for news on the May Revise. We expect to hear something by Friday. I continue to be optimistic about the compact agreement we reached with Governor Schwarzenegger. That compact will help us create greater stability and predictability in our budget. Wang Award Winners Yesterday we honored the five recipients of the 2005 Wang Family Excellence Award. We had many outstanding submissions this year and this is truly an exceptional group. Congratulations to all of our winners, and thanks again to the Wang Award selection committee. Edison Teachers for Tomorrow Last, I want to extend our appreciation to Bob Foster and Edison International for their continued support of the Edison Teachers for Tomorrow program. Edison is contributing $225,000 this year to fund scholarships for teacher credential students. Since the program’s inception in 1999, 130 Edison scholars have entered the teaching profession in the Los Angeles Area.Thank you very much, Bob. Chair Galinson, that concludes my report.
