CSU Northridge provides a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to prevention including nationally certified ATOD peer educators, substance-free housing, TIPs training, eCHECKUP To Go, Matador Nights, Greek 101, Aware Awake Alive, RADD, DUI Checkpoints and more. One CSUN best practice is our ATOD Counselor, Janis Martin, CATC III. Using motivational interviewing, Janis creates student-centered sessions at the Klotz SHC that have reduced risk and enhanced healthy choices for over a thousand CSUN students. Her networking and partnerships with campus colleagues such as CSUN Athletics, Greek Life, Housing, Orientation, and student groups have promoted and enhanced collaboration to address substance use. Janis has created a safe place for students with ATOD issues. For example: a student addicted to heroin began counseling with Janis; two years of harm reduction led to sobriety, ongoing recovery, graduation, and graduate school. Janis incorporates student learning outcomes into her counseling sessions to assess clients’ progress in critical areas such as: Becoming One’s Own Person and Utilizing Effective Thinking.
