Explanatory Notes

1. The census dates for this report were the end of the third week of instruction for campuses on a quarter system and the fourth week of instruction for campuses on a semester system.

2. Enrollment type is based on the number of semester or quarter credit units for which a student was enrolled on the census date as follows:

     Part-Time students - fewer than 12 credit units
     Full-Time students - 12 or more credit units
As of Fall 1994, for postbaccalaureate/graduate students only:
     Part-time students--fewer than 9 semester or quarter hours.
     Full-time students--9 or more semester or quarter hours.
3. Admission basis categories of "regular admits", "alternative", and "special admits" are defined briefly in Appendix A.

4. Students identify themselves by ethnicity and are categorized in one of the following groups:

  • American Indian or Alaskan Native. All persons having origins in any of the original people of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.
  • African American. All persons having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa (except those of Latino origin).
  • Latino/Latino.
      - Mexican American, Mexican, Chicano. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Mexico.
      - Central American. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Central America.
      - South American. All persons having origins in any of the original people of South America.
      - Cuban. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Cuba.
      - Puerto Rican. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Puerto Rico.
      - Other Latino/Spanish-origin/Latino. All persons having origins in any of the original people of the Caribbean Islands, or other persons of Spanish or Latino origin, and not included in the categories of Mexican, Central American, South American, Cuban and Puerto Rican.
  • Asian American.
      - Chinese. All persons having origins in any of the original people of China.
      - Japanese. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Japan.
      - Korean. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Korea.
      - Asian Indian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of the Indian subcontinent and Southwest Asia.
      - Other Asian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Asia not included in the Asian categories of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Asian Indian.
  • Southeast Asian.
      - Cambodian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Cambodia.
      - Laotian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Laos.
      - Vietnamese. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Vietnam.
      - Thai. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Thailand.
      - Other Southeast Asian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Southeast Asia, but not included in the categories of Cambodian, Laotian, Vietnamese, and Thai.
  • Pacific Islander.
      - Guamanian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Guam.
      - Hawaiian. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Hawaii.
      - Samoan. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Samoa.
      - Other Pacific Islander. All persons having origins in any of the original people of the Pacific Islands, including Tahiti, Fiji, and the Marshall Islands, and not included in any of the categories of Guamanian, Hawaiian, and Samoan.
  • White, Non-Latino. All persons having origins in any of the original people of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East (except those of Latino origin).
  • Filipino. All persons having origins in any of the original people of the Philippine Islands.
  • Other. All persons who do not fall into one of the above categories.
  • No Response. Students not surveyed or who do not mark a choice of ethnic codes from the list provided.
  • Declined to State. Persons who decline to identify themselves by ethnic category.

    5.  Enrollments are summarized by ethnic group after first excluding "nonresident aliens." Students having an ethnic group code of "all other responses," "no response," and "declined to state" are grouped together in this report as "unknown."

    6.  Class level is determined by the number of accumulated semester or quarter credit hours as follows:

    7.  A graduate student holds an acceptable baccalaureate or its equivalent and has been enrolled in a graduate degree program.

    9.  Enrollment in the Statewide Nursing Program is now included in Dominguez Hills.

    10. Beginning fall 1999, International Programs is included in all statistical reports.

    Admission Basis Categories for New Undergraduates
    Code

    1. First-Time Freshmen

    Regular
    A. Applicants who are California residents or graduates of a California high school (40753).
    B. Applicants who are neither California residents nor graduates of a California high school (40754).
    C. Applicants who are graduates of foreign secondary schools (40755).

    Exceptional
    H. Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are not classified as "disadvantaged" (40900-general).
    I.  Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are classified as "disadvantaged" (40901).

    Other
    D. Applicants who are adult students (40756) and full-time permanent or probationary employees (41804e).
    E. Applicants who are not otherwise eligible provided they are "eligible veterans" as defined in Subdivision (a) (1) of Section 1652, Title 38, United States code (40756.1).
    F. Applicants to curricula of less than four years (40757).
    L. Students admitted in pilot programs (41250) (EXCEPTION: "L" admits were considered regular admits from fall 1995 through spring 1999)


    2.  Undergraduate transfers

    N. Applicants who are California residents and who have completed 56 units of transferable college credit (40803).

    X. Applicants who were regularly admissible except for deficiencies in the 15-unit CSU course preparation pattern, which were corrected after graduation from high school (40804.1).
