CSU Enrollment by Ethnic Group

Explanatory Notes

1. The census dates for this report were the end of the third week of instruction for campuses on a quarter system and the fourth week of instruction for campuses on a semester system.

2. Enrollment type is based on the number of semester or quarter credit units for which a student was enrolled on the census date as follows:

    Part-time students - fewer than 12 credit units
    Full-time students - 12 or more credit units

3. Admission basis categories of "regular admits," "alternative," and "special admits" are defined briefly in Appendix A.

4. Students identify themselves by ethnicity and are categorized in one of the following groups:

  • African American. All persons descending from any of the black racial groups of Africa (except those of Latino origin).

  • American Indian or Alaskan Native. All persons descending from any of the original people of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.

  • Asian American. All persons descending from any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian Subcontinent. This area includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan, India, and Thailand.

  • Filipino. All persons descending from any of the original people of the Philippine Islands.

  • Mexican American, Mexican. All persons descending from any of the original people of Mexico.

  • Other Latino. All persons descending from any of the original people of Central America or South America , including persons having origins from Cuba, Puerto Rico, other Caribbean Islands, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race (except Mexican American).

  • Pacific Islander. All persons descending from any of the original peoples of the Pacific Islands (except Filipinos). This area includes, for example, Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Guam, Fiji, and the Marshall Islands.

  • White Non-Latino. All persons descending from any of the original people of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East (except those of Latino origin).

  • Unknown. Students having an ethnic group code of "No Response," and "Declined to State" are grouped together in this report as "Unknown." This group also includes students whose ethnicity cannot be classified into one of the identified groups.

    5. Enrollments are summarized by ethnic group after first excluding "Nonresident Aliens." Students having an ethnic group code of "All Other Responses," "No Response," and "Declined to State" are grouped together in this report as "Unknown."

    6. Enrollments in undergraduate programs (Table 4) include all undergraduate students, freshman through senior, plus postbaccalaureate students seeking a second bachelor's degree.

    7. Enrollments in master's programs (Table 6) include only those students classified as graduate students. Postbaccalaureate students are not included.

    8. Percents by ethnic group, "African American" through "White Non-Latino" sum to 100. Percents of "Total Identified," "Unknown," and "Nonresident Alien" sum to 100.

    9. In Tables 1, 3, 9, and 11, ratios by ethnic group, "African American" through "White Non-Latino" sum to 1.0 with allowance for independent rounding. Ratios of "Total Identified," "Unknown," and "Nonresident Alien" sum to 1.0.

    10. Admission Basis Categories for New Undergraduates:

    First-Time Freshmen

    A   Applicants who are California residents or graduates of a California high school (40753).

    B   Applicants who are neither California residents nor graduates of a California high school (40754).

    C   Applicants who are graduates of foreign secondary schools (40755).

    Alternative

    D   Applicants who are adult students (40756) and full-time permanent or probationary employees (41804e).

    F   Applicants to curricula of less than four years (40757).

    L   Applicants who satisfied the eligibility criteria of the University of California; in effect fall 1995 through spring 1999.

    M   Students determined to be eligible on the basis of the High School Proficiency Examination (SA 75-74 (P)).

    Special

    E   Applicants who are not otherwise eligible provided they are "eligible veterans" as defined in Subdivision (a)(1) of Section 1652, Title 38, United States Code (40756.1).

    H   Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are not classified as "disadvantaged" (40900 - General).

    I   Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are classified as "disadvantaged" (40901).

    Undergraduate Transfers

    Regular

    N   Applicants who are California residents and who have completed 56 units of transferable college credit (40803).

    V   Applicants who are not California residents and who have completed 56 units of transferable college credit (40803.1).

    O   Applicants with fewer than 56 units, 2.0 GPA, eligible under 1965 standards (40804).

    P   Applicants with fewer than 56 units, 2.0 GPA, eligible under "grandfather" clause (40804).

    S   Applicants who, in the judgment of the appropriate campus authority, can succeed at the campus (40806) and full-time permanent or probationary employees (41804e).

    Alternative

    L   Students admitted in pilot programs (41250); not in effect fall 1995 through spring 1999.

    M   Students determined to be eligible on the basis of the High School Proficiency Examination (SA 75-74 (P)).

    W   Applicants who are adult students (40807).

    Special

    Q   Applicants with particular majors (40805).

    R   Applicants who are not otherwise eligible, but admitted as "eligible veterans" as defined in Subdivision (a) (1) of Section 1652, Title 38, United States Code (40805.1).

    T   Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are not classified as "disadvantaged" (40900 - General).

    U   Applicants not otherwise eligible and who are classified as "disadvantaged" (40901).

    11. The numbers included in this report do not include the students who are studying abroad in fall 1998 via CSU International Programs. For selected data on these students please see the new Statistical Report for the CSU International Programs.

    Numbers for the CSU International Programs will be included in the 1998-99 College Year Statistical Report, and they will be included in all applicable Statistical Reports thereafter.

    12. Enrollment in the Statewide Nursing Program is now included in Dominguez Hills.
