CSU Enrollments on the Rise Again

Chart A. Fall Term Enrollment and Full-Time
Equivalent Students (FTES) from Fall 1996 to Fall 2006
FTES represent the number of
students that would be served if they all attempted a 15-unit course load.
|
The California State
University enrollment in fall 2006 surpassed last year’s student
headcount. The current enrollment
figure of 417,112 students is 11,830 higher than the 405,282 students
recorded in fall 2005.
Higher fall enrollments occurred
at 19 CSU campuses. The largest
annual gains were at Fresno (up 1,727 students), San Diego (up 1,612
students), Northridge (up 1,317 students), and San Marcos (up 1,232
students). Other campuses with large annual gains were Long Beach (up 1,027 students)
and Fullerton (up 881 students). The System’s newest campus, Channel
Islands, grew by 548 students.
Another way to gauge
enrollments is to convert student headcounts into full-time equivalent
students (FTES). Dividing total
student credit units attempted by 15, the normative workload for students
pursuing a degree in 4 years, generates the number of FTES associated with
the observed enrollment. The current
number of FTES is 343,199. Last
year’s figure was 325,561; so the annual gain in FTES from the prior year was
17,638 or a 5 percent increase.
|
In spring 2006 the state
approved a new formula for determining the FTE of graduate students (i.e.,
students seeking a master’s or Ph.D. degree). Starting this college year, 12 units attempted by graduate
students equals one FTE. However, for
students seeking a baccalaureate or credential it takes 15 units attempted to
equal one FTE.
On average students enrolled
in fall 2006 attempted 12.1 units.
This is the same as the average for students in fall 2005.
The two graph lines in the
chart displayed above illustrate the relationship between enrollment numbers
and FTES, and they chart the enrollment trend from fall 1996 to fall
2006. Tables 1 and 2, shown on the
next page, list the exact systemwide numbers used to plot the lines and they
list campus-specific numbers.
For the 2nd year in a
row, Fullerton recorded the highest campus enrollment for the system
(35,921). However, San Diego leads in
FTES (28,920). Long Beach and
Northridge continue to be two of the System’s larger campuses, with headcount
enrollment numbers quite similar to Fullerton.
