CSU Enrollments on the Rise Again

Chart A. Fall Term Enrollment and Full-Time
Equivalent Students (FTES) from fall 1996 to Fall 2005
FTES represent the number of
students that would be served if they all attempted a 15-unit course load.
|
California State University
enrollment in fall 2005 surpassed last year’s student headcount. The current enrollment figure of 405,292
students is 8,244 higher than the 397,048 students recorded in fall 2004.
Higher fall enrollments
occurred at 14 CSU campuses. The
largest annual gains were at Fullerton (up 2,296 students), Northridge (up
1,902 students), Long Beach (up 1,068 students), and San Jose (up 931
students). Other campuses with large annual gains were San Luis Obispo (up 893
students) and Pomona (up 882
students). The System’s newest
campus, Channel Islands, grew by 554 students.
Another way to gauge
enrollments is to convert student headcounts into full-time equivalent
students (FTES). Dividing total
student credit units attempted by 15, the normative workload for students
pursuing a degree in 4 years, generates the number of FTES associated with
the observed enrollment. The current
number of FTES is 325,542. Last
year’s figure was 317,234; so the annual gain in FTES from the prior year was
8,308, or a 2.6 percent increase.
|
The slightly larger
proportional gain in FTES reflects the higher average workload exhibited by
the fall 2005 students (12.1 units vs. 12.0 units). All toll, the current
number of FTE is fourth-fifths the size of the 405,292 headcount.
The two graph lines in the
chart displayed above illustrate the relationship between enrollment numbers
and FTES, and they chart the enrollment trend from fall 1995 to fall
2005. Tables 1 and 2, shown on the next
page, list the exact systemwide numbers used to plot the lines and they list
campus-specific numbers.
For the first time, Fullerton recorded the highest
campus enrollment for the system (35,040).
However, Long Beach leads in FTES (27,060). San Diego and Northridge continue to be two of the System’s
larger campuses, with headcount enrollment numbers quite similar to Fullerton
and Long Beach.
