CSU Enrollment Continues to Grow
*Represents the number of
students served taking the equivalent of a 15-unit course load.
**Fall 2002 figures are based
on Opening Term reports. Official census files are not yet available.
Chart A. Opening Term Enrollment and Full-Time
Equivalent Students*, from Fall 1993 to Fall 2002**
|
Enrollment at the
California State University rose for the eighth consecutive year, and for the
first time in CSU history surpassed 400,000.
The headcount on opening day for fall 2002 was 406,896 students, or
18,291 more students than fall 2001.
After eight years of consecutive growth, the CSU has increased its
fall enrollment by over 87,000 students since fall 1994.
This year marks the
opening of CSU’s 23rd campus, Channel Islands. The inaugural class of new students is 630 strong. The campus is also serving 1,509
continuing students that originally gained admission to the CSU at
Northridge.
Enrollment growth was
widespread among the other 22 campuses.
In fact, 21 recorded an enrollment increase over its fall 2001
number. The largest annual gains were
at San Jose with an increase of 2,359 students, at Fullerton with an increase
of 1,786 students, and at Sacramento with an increase of 1,635 students.
Other campuses with large annual gains were San Francisco (1,513), Long Beach
(1,307) and San Marcos (1,182).
Systemwide, the net enrollment gain was 18,291 students, or about five
percent more than the fall 2001 student headcount.
|
Another way to gauge
enrollments is to convert student headcounts into full-time equivalent
students (FTES). Dividing total
student credit units attempted by 15, the normative workload for students
pursuing a degree in 4 years, generates the number of FTES. The average CSU
student now enrolls in 11.7 units, just under the minimum 12-unit workload
for full-time students on financial aid.
So, for example, the current number of FTES, 318,035, is roughly
three-fourths the size of the 406,896 headcount. The annual growth in FTES was comparable to growth in
students. Systemwide, the net
increase in FTES was 15,131, or about a five percent gain over the prior
year.
The two graph lines in
the chart displayed above indicate the relationship between enrollment
numbers and numbers of full-time equivalent students (FTES), and they
illustrate the enrollment trend from fall 1993 to fall 2002. Tables 1 and 2, shown on the next page,
list the exact systemwide numbers used to plot the lines and they list
campus-specific numbers.
This year Long Beach
recorded the highest campus enrollment for the system, a status usually held
by San Diego. However, San Diego
still leads in FTES.
