Chart A. Opening Term Enrollment and Full-Time
Equivalent Students,* from Fall 1992 to Fall 2001**
|
Enrollment at the California State University rose for
the seventh consecutive year. The
headcount on opening day for fall 2001 was 388,734 students, or 20,265 more students
than fall 2000. In the last seven
years the CSU has grown by over 69,000 students.
This year’s growth was widespread. Of the system’s 22 campuses, 19 recorded enrollment
increases. The largest gains were at
San Diego with an increase of 2,562 students, at Northridge with an increase
of 2,382 students, and at
Long Beach with an increase of 2,341 students. Other campuses with large increases were Fullerton (+1,976),
San Jose (+1,362), Sacramento (+1,209) and San Luis Obispo (+1,201).

relationship between enrollment
numbers and numbers of full-time equivalent students (FTES).

The number of FTES is derived by dividing total student
credit units attempted by 15, the normative workload for students pursuing a
degree in 4 years. The average CSU student now enrolls in 11.7 units, just
under the minimum 12-unit workload for full-time students on financial
aid. The current number of FTES,
302,847, is roughly three-fourths the size of the headcount.
The CSU anticipates that it will provide
instruction in excess of its budgeted college year (CY) FTES target of
305,854. The 22 CSU campuses and
special programs (i.e., International Programs, Summer Arts, and CalStateTEACH)
estimate that they will serve 314,276 full-time equivalent students by the
end of this school year – almost 23,722 FTES (8.2 percent) more than the
290,554 FTES served during CY 2000-01.
