CSU Credential Program Enrollment Reports
Definitions and Explanations
1. This report is based on the Student Enrollment File (ERSS) of the Enrollment Reporting System.
2. The census date for this report is the close of the third week of instruction for campuses on a quarter system and the fourth week of instruction for campuses on a semester system across all terms that comprise the college year. Enrollments are in terms of the net number of students actively enrolled on the census date.
3. The academic year includes fall, winter (if applicable), and spring semesters. The college year begins with the summer term which is followed by the fall, winter (if applicable), and spring terms.
4. Six of the campuses are on a quarter system that includes a winter term, while the remaining campuses are on a semester system. College year enrollments are calculated as follows:
- Semester campuses: average of fall and spring term enrollments plus one half of summer enrollment. CSU Stanislaus became a semester campus in 2010-11.
- Quarter campuses: average of fall, winter, and spring enrollments plus one third of summer enrollment.
- International Programs and CalStateTEACH: average of term enrollments.
5. Full-time equivalent students (FTES) are calculated using student level as follows:
- Undergraduate and postbaccalaureate full-time equivalent students (FTES) by term are derived by dividing total semester or quarter term credit units attempted by 15. Annual undergraduate and postbaccalaureate full-time equivalent students, whether for annualized summer, academic year, or college year FTES, are derived by dividing total semester student credit units attempted by 30 or total quarter student credit units attempted by 45. Annual International Programs, and CalStateTEACH undergraduate and postbaccalaureate FTES are calculated by dividing total student credit units attempted by 30.
- Graduate full-time equivalent students (FTES) by term are derived by dividing total semester or quarter term credit units attempted by 12. Annual graduate full-time equivalent students, whether for annualized summer, academic year, or college year FTES, are derived by dividing total semester student credit units attempted by 24 or total quarter student credit units attempted by 36. Annual graduate FTES for International Programs, and CalStateTEACH are calculated by dividing total student credit units attempted by 24.
6. College Year headcount enrollment and full-time equivalent student (FTES) totals are often displayed to one decimal place in this report even though they are calculated to six decimal points in the software. Systemwide headcount enrollment and FTES results may therefore differ if campus totals are summed employing different rounding rules.
7. For purposes of this report, class level for undergraduates is determined by the value found in the Enrollment Reporting System data element Student Level Code.
Campuses typically determine student level for undergraduates by the number of accumulated semester or quarter credit hours as follows:

8. A postbaccalaureate student holds an acceptable baccalaureate or its equivalent and has not been admitted to a graduate program.
9. A graduate student holds an acceptable baccalaureate or its equivalent and has been admitted to a graduate program. The distinction between graduate and postbaccalaureate students is based on the information reported in the Enrollment Reporting System data element Student Standing Code.
10. "Campus Totals" refer to enrollments for campuses, excluding supplemental programs operated by the CSU. "System Totals" include enrollments for International Programs and CalStateTEACH. Beginning in college year 1998-99, Statewide Nursing is included in Dominguez Hills enrollment.
11. Preliminary designated subject credentials can be acquired without attending a CSU campus. Internship credential recommendations are made when the student begins a CSU education credential program.
12. Credential Subject Matter Waiver Objectives are grouped as follows:
- Credential Program. A credential program is designed to develop expertise in the skills of teaching. Students learn such skills as classroom management, lesson planning, and curriculum development. Usually, but not necessarily, students begin the credential program after earning the bachelorís degree.
- Regular Credential Program. Normal course of study in a credential program that is distinct from either integrated or internship programs. A regular program is available to undergraduates under certain circumstances or, more usually, postbaccalaureate and graduate students. A regular credential program can include a single subject, multiple subject, special education, or service credential objective.
- Integrated Undergraduate Credential Program. Allows a student to complete course work for a baccalaureate degree and credential at the same time. A student is eligible for acceptance/admission to an integrated credential program as a junior. While they are "on a coursework track" toward program admission as a freshman or sophomore, they cannot be officially admitted until they have junior status.
- Internship Program. Students with a bachelor's degree who meet subject matter competency requirements and choose to work while learning to teach. These specially designed programs place the student in a classroom as a teacher under supervision while completing coursework on teaching theory and techniques.
- Single Subject Credential. This credential authorizes a person to teach in a classroom where only one subject is taught, such as a classroom in departmentalized high schools and junior high schools.†
- Multiple Subject Credential. This credential authorizes a person to teach in a classroom where many different subjects are taught by a single individual, such as in elementary schools.
- Special Education Credential. This credential involves study related to special education of the handicapped or disabled.
- Service Credential. This credential involves study related to non-classroom specialties such as administrative services, pupil personnel services, and clinical rehabilitative services.
