CSU REVIEW

(Text only)

November 1996

In the California State University, an undergraduate program or campus is designated as impacted when the number of applications received in the first month of the filing period is greater than the available spaces. Such programs or campuses are authorized to use supplementary admission criteria to screen applicants.

Students interested in an impacted program or campus must apply for admission during November 1996 for admission in fall 1997. Applications for admission to impacted programs and campuses are not accepted after the first month of the filing period. Applicants to programs that are impacted at every CSU campus where offered may wish to file multiple applications to maximize consideration for admission.

Applicants to locally impacted programs (those where the program is impacted at one or more but not all campuses) may designate an alternate campus that offers the same program. In such cases, if the applicant is not accommodated in the locally impacted program, the application may be redirected to an alternate campus in the same major and the filing of additional applications is unnecessary. However, applications cannot be redirected to other impacted campuses or programs.

Consideration for admission to any impacted program is contingent on first meeting the regular admission requirements for the CSU. Supplementary admission criteria are used to screen all applicants for admission to impacted programs, including those students currently enrolled at the campus in other majors and seeking access to the impacted program.

Included in this Review are brief descriptions of supplementary admission criteria used to screen applicants to impacted programs and campuses. Counselors and prospective applicants are cautioned that these statements are limited to a general overview of the criteria. More detailed descriptions of the supplementary criteria are sent to applicants upon receipt of their applications.

Architecture and Physical Therapy are impacted at all CSU campuses offering the programs. Occupational Therapy at San Jose and Communication and Community Health Education majors at San Diego are newly impacted for 1997-98.

Social Work at Chico is no longer impacted.

Students seeking access to impacted programs must apply during the first month of the filing period. The critical dates in some campus listings refer to the impacted program and are in addition to filing dates that pertain to admission to the campus.

CPSU San Luis Obispo continues to receive more applications than can be accommodated in most programs.

San Luis Obispo has adopted a Multi Criteria Admission (MCA) process to determine eligibility for undergraduate admission. Information on the MCA process is provided to all San Luis Obispo applicants.

Freshman applicants are evaluated on the basis of grade point average in college preparatory courses, overall GPA, completion of additional college preparatory courses, test scores, extracurricular activities, and major-related work experience.

Transfer candidates are evaluated on the basis of major-specific courses completed, general education courses completed, grade point average, work experience, and extracurricular activities. The MCA process also considers nonacademic factors that contribute to campus diversity. Students may also be considered for admission based on special talents, interests, or experiences.

All applicants, regardless of class level, are required to meet supplementary criteria. First-time freshman applicants for the fall term are urged to take the SAT I or ACT either at the October or November test administrations.

Applicants offered conditional admission must submit final transcripts, test scores, and other materials required to complete the application portfolio and confirm their intent to enroll by submitting a Student Intent to Register (SIR) form. Completed portfolios are reviewed to verify admission eligibility and, at that time, applicants are notified of formal admission to the university.

Sonoma State University has been authorized to conduct a three-year admission experiment to address retention and graduation of students and enrollment of students who are disadvantaged educationally or economically. To help achieve this goal, Sonoma State University will extend the initial filing period to three months. All applications received prior to February 1, 1997 will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievement.

Students seeking admission to any major at San Diego State University are advised to apply by December 15, 1996. Applications to impacted programs must be filed during the first month of the filing period.

English & Math GE/Breadth Requirements Vital for Transfer Students

The number of upper-division transfer students who have completed CSU's general education/breadth or the IGETC requirements in communication in the English language (at least 9 semester units) and mathematics (usually 3 semester units) requirement has been increasing. Approximately two-thirds of upper-division community college students transferring to CSU have completed at least one English and one mathematics course.

CSU has consulted with representatives of the California Community Colleges to determine a reasonable approach to further reduce the number of upper-division transfer students who have not completed the general education requirements in English and mathematics. It was agreed that a fall 1998 implementation date would give community colleges sufficient time to inform students of CSU's upper-division transfer requirements and to schedule sufficient sections of English and mathematics to meet the demand of prospective transfer students. Students will have three regular terms and two summer sessions in which to complete the required English and mathematics courses.

On the recommendation of community college and CSU campus representatives, an intensive information campaign is being mounted to ensure that community college students fully understand CSU's upper-division transfer requirements which include successful completion of a minimum of 56 transferable semester (84 quarter) units encompassing 30 semester units of courses meeting CSU's general education/breadth or the IGETC requirements including courses in communication in the English language (at least 9 semester units) and mathematics (usually 3 semester units).

The community college experience provides a strong foundation on which students can build baccalaureate programs. However, CSU's experience has been that transfer students undertaking upper-division university courses without having completed lower-division English and mathematics courses are not well equipped to cope with the demands of university study. With the support of community college counselors, transfer center advisors, matriculation specialists, CSU outreach and admission staff, and other persons concerned with the academic progress of students, we can provide California students with a sound educational foundation upon which to build study in their majors.
