Best Practices
San Diego State University
For a number of years, San Diego State has been committed to offering students large-scale, late-night, nonalcoholic events during the first five weeks of the fall semester. Aztec Nights has now become a respected tradition on campus, and its popularity continues to grow. SDSU has measured substantial declines in alcohol-related medical transports and policy violations that have persisted since the Aztec Nights' launch.
Other outstanding San Diego State achievements include:
- Striving to reduce student motivations to abuse AODs, working to reduce access to drugs and underage drinking, and offering alternative to AOD use and harms.
- The e-Check Up To Go, which has been mandatory for all incoming students for several years. The campus participates in special enforcement operations and county-level coalitions to address underage and binge drinking.
- Being the first campus in its community to host a drop-off site for the Prescription Drug Take Back Day in cooperation with the DEA.
- Supporting the use of alternatives to drunk driving, in addition to alternative social events.
- Founding member of the RADD California Coalition.
