Violence Prevention Champion Award

Mayra Lewis began her work at Cal Poly Pomona as the Assistant Coordinator of the Violence Prevention and Women's Resource Center (VPWRC). In her first year, she developed new educational programs on violence against women, including The Silent Witness Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, In-Class Presentations on Bystander Intervention, RAD Self-Defense Classes, the Just Between Men Conference, Prom For a Cause, and training curriculum for the University Police Department on Violence Against Women. As a result of Lewis' dedication and work, the number of individuals receiving training on sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence rose by 40 percent in the first year.

Other achievements include:

  • Serving as the primary advocate on campus for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and other crimes.
  • Managing an office staff comprised of two part-time peer educators and over 25 student interns and volunteers.
  • Maintaining and helping guide the continuing growth of VPWRC's programs, including education and outreach programs.
  • Successfully creating partnerships on campus that have furthered the cause of violence prevention. She has partnered with entities such as Campus Police, Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, the PRIDE center, Associated Students Inc., Greek Life, Orientation Services, the Cesar E. Chavez Center, Academic Departments, and others.
