Joy Stewart-James, EdD receives her awardJoy Stewart-James, EdD
CSU Sacramento

Dr. Joy Stewart-James is an innovative leader in alcohol and other drug education at CSU Sacramento and in the community who, through creativity and collaboration, has established a comprehensive, innovative program. Despite economic challenges and limited resources, she has managed to sustain and even expand the AOD program as well as the Violence and Sexual Assault Support Services program.

Dr. Stewart-James' achievements include:

  • Effectively lobbying with other administrators for CSU Sacramento's needs.
  • Serving an instrumental role in implementing a mandatory online tutorial—Student Success—for all incoming freshman and transfer students, which uses pre- and post-test measurements to educate and assess student learning regarding alcohol, drugs, and violence issues. The data from these tutorials has proven invaluable for her staff's prevention, education and assessment efforts.
  • Establishing a thriving chapter of Active Minds at CSU Sacramento. Active Minds is the only national organization working to utilize the student voice to educate the college population about mental health issues. It collaborates with alcohol and violence education programs to provide information to students and enables the campus's AOD program to educate students on the link between alcohol and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and stress.
  • Supporting the creation of a two-tiered approach to requiring alcohol policy violation classes.
  • Supporting and searching for new ways to enforce CSU Sacramento's AOD policy issues through her collaboration with campus law enforcement, residential life and the student life office.
