Janis Martin works with students challenged by substance use, DUIs, anger management, and relationship and self-esteem issues, and creates a safe, student-centered experience that has reduced risk and enhanced healthy choices for many students.

Her outstanding contributions include:

  • Developing dynamic partnerships with Housing, Athletics, Counseling Services, Greek organizations, Police Services, academic departments, and community organizations.
  • Creating a Peer Mentor Program in which recovering students mentor other students preparing to attend their first 12-step meeting, reducing anxiety and apprehension and promoting adherence.
  • Collaborating with a graduate student to co-develop an AOD seminar for sanctioned residents.
  • Creating an AOD support group with a pre-doctoral intern and working closely with athletic teams.
  • Participating in outreach efforts, including faculty partnerships, the Great American Smoke Out, Take Back the Night, and alternative programming such as Matador Nights, where she helped serve mocktails and gave safe partying tips to 800 students in one evening.
  • Serving as a "Training in Intervention Procedures" (TIPS) trainer.
  • Offering smoking cessation groups to students and staff.
