- Began his career as a bus driver in Los Angeles in 1971.
- Oversaw transportation service through the 1984 Olympic Games, the 1992 riots and the 1994 Northridge earthquake while working in operations at Metro.
- Became CEO of Metro Transit in Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1997.
- Appointed CEO of the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in 2001. In 2005, OCTA was named the best public transportation system in the nation by the American Public Transportation Association.
- In 2010, Leahy returned to Los Angeles to become the CEO of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro).
- He was recently recognized by his peers in Metro Magazine, a trade publication, as being one of the country’s most influential leaders in the transit industry.
