- Invented "T-bag" approach to synthesis, which received a U.S. patent in 1975.
- Founded Multiple Peptide Systems to commercialize the T-bag peptide synthesis patent. This process allowed the making of peptides 20 to 50 times faster and more economical than existing methods.
- Founded Torrey Pines Institute of Molecular Studies in 1989.
- Founded Houghten Pharmaceuticals to capitalize on discoveries at the Torrey Pines Institute to focus on drug discovery techniques that enable the screening of millions to billions of compounds in less than one week.
- Today, the San Diego and Port St. Lucie, Fla.-based Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is comprised of more than 160 employees and is recognized worldwide for its innovative scientific team.
