- One of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who, in 1957, desegregated a public school system by being the first black students to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Ark.
- Wrote Lessons from Little Rock and Simple Not Easy: Reflections on Community Social Responsibility and Tolerance. Both books draw on his own experiences; Lessons covers his early years and Simple Not Easy is a collection of recent speeches and published essays.
- Currently, CEO of Terrence J. Roberts and Associates, a management consulting firm. Also a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed social worker.
- Served as chair of the master's program in psychology at Antioch University, and Assistant Dean of Student Services at UCLA School of Social Welfare.
- Awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton along with the other members of the Little Rock Nine in 1999.
