2011 Legislative Session – A Glance Back
While much of the legislature’s attention focused on the state’s fiscal situation this past year there are several overarching themes that continued to resonate with lawmakers and impacted the CSU. While many of these are not new we felt it important to note some of the key issues that surfaced along the way and likely be on the agenda in the coming year.

California has to make cuts to almost all programs and services that many would have thought unthinkable not that long ago. These cuts affected almost all programs, but particularly hurt were all three segments of higher education – the CSU, the University of California (UC) and the California Community Colleges. A recent report by the College Board reinforced the disinvestment in higher education throughout the country but noted it was even greater in California. These cuts were a painful reality resulting in increased tuition fees. More »

Looking Ahead to 2012
There are several issues as the CSU heads into the second year of the two year session that will begin moving after the New Year. As the legislature returns back to work in 2012, many of the measures that were introduced to address accountability, Cal Grants, and tuition fee notification will need more attention by the body. Measures restricting tuition all became two-year measures that will need to either move out of their house of origin, or be set aside for the year when they come back in January. More »
