Legislative Profile – Senator Bob Huff
Senator Bob Huff was elected in November 2008 to represent the 29th Senate District which includes portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Mr. Huff served as an Assembly member from 2004-08.
Senator Huff has run on a platform of education, primarily K-12 education, and during his tenure in the Assembly was focused on many aspects of education reform. He led efforts to continue the Standard Testing and Reporting (STAR) program for second graders and fought for parents’ rights to choose the best school for their children. He is also a vocal proponent for funding for public charter schools.
Senator Huff has also focused much of his public elected career on transportation development issues and has introduced several policies dealing with the state’s transportation in to the 21st century.
During the 2009-10 session, Senator Huff introduced legislation that would open up public school enrollment for parents wanting to move their children from their current school districts to another. Additionally he also introduced legislation that focused on career technical education courses as well as a proposal that would require finger printing for individuals working at schools that provide education such as foreign language in a private setting.
Most of Senator Huff’s professional and business experience prior to joining the legislature has been in the agriculture industry. A resident of Diamond Bar, he served on the city council from 1995-2004 and served as mayor in 1997 and 2001. With a focus on transportation issues, Senator Huff was Diamond Bar’s delegate to the Four Corners Transportation Policy Group and was Vice President of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. He was President of the Foothill Transit Executive Board and founding Chairman and Executive Board Member of the Alameda Corridor East Construction Authority.
Born in Calexico, California, Mr. Huff grew up on his family’s farm in Imperial Valley. Mr. Huff attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology, graduating with honors. Senator Huff and his wife, Mei Mei, have three sons, a daughter and three granddaughters.
