Legislative Profile: Felipe Fuentes
Assembly Member Felipe Fuentes represents the 39th Assembly district which is comprised of the northeast San Fernando Valley in Southern California. Representative Fuentes is the grandson of Mexican immigrants who lived and worked in Pacoima, Arleta, Sylmar and Panorama City since the mid-1950’s. He was elected to the Assembly during a special election in May 2007.
Assembly Member Fuentes has focused much of his work in the Assembly on water, energy and employment issues. He is also rumored to be a possible candidate for the future role as Assembly Speaker. Prior to representing the 39th Assembly District, Fuentes served as the Deputy Mayor for the San Fernando Valley and Chief of Staff to then Los Angeles City Council President Alex Padilla.
Locally Fuentes helped work on projects including the construction and revitalization of policy and fire stations, libraries and infrastructure improvements in the Northwest Valley. Fuentes has also focused on school safety and worked to establish the “Safe Route to Schools” program, creating anti-gang program and helped to bring the first police station to the San Fernando Valley in 25 years.
Assemblymember Fuentes attended local schools, graduating from San Fernando High School and later earning his degrees from UCLA and the Graziadio School of Business at Pepperdine University. He now resides in Sylmar with his wife, Lena Wu-Fuentes and their one-year old daughter Illiana Flor Fuentes. |
