Legislative Profile: Assembly Member Alyson Huber

With less than a week until the new member’s of the Assembly were sworn in, Assembly Member Alyson Huber, received word that she was likely to have won her election, claiming a seat that had been held by Republicans years. Her last minute victory took almost everyone by surprise as various directories listed her opponent as the newly elected member representing the 10th Assembly District, as did the door to her new office. The Assembly even invited her opponent to a legislative training seminar run by the Assembly for all incoming freshmen, while Ms. Huber waited as the final votes were counted and eventually provided her a victory with less than 500 votes.

Ms Huber is a graduate of Lodi High School and attended San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. She then received a scholarship to attend California State University, Chico, but left the school after state budget cuts threatened Chico's speech and debate teams continued existence. Ms. Huber eventually graduated from Cornell University and obtained her law degree from the University of California's Hastings College of the Law.

Prior to her election to the Assembly, Ms. Huber had her own practice, specializing in business litigation and intellectual property law. She also belonged to the Junior Leagues of California focusing her attention on reforming California’s foster care system and served on the Conference of Delegates of California Bar Associations. She also volunteered to serve as an advocate for the indigent, at-risk youth and those with serious life-threatening illnesses who otherwise could not afford to seek legal advice.

Ms. Huber will serve as the Chair for the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, which works with the Bureau of the State Auditor, to audit and investigate various public entities. She has also been appointed to the Committee on Accountability and Administrative Review, a brand new committee that was given the scope of identifying savings and efficiencies in the management of state government, reviewing and studying the implementation, operation, and effectiveness of state programs and agencies.

She also serves as member of the Higher Education Committee, which has direct oversight over the three public higher education segments: the University of California, California Community Colleges and the CSU, in addition to private postsecondary education, and student financial aid. Other committees that she serves on include: Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy, Committee on Veterans Affairs, Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife and the Select Committee on Lowering CA’s High School Dropout Rates.

Ms. Huber lives in El Dorado Hills with her husband, Tim and two of their four children. They have two children in college. Her 10th Assembly District includes Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin counties. It includes the cities of Lodi, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Stockton, and Jackson.
