Legislative Update
Despite the Legislature’s desire to leave so that they could partake in the Democratic National Convention in Denver, they still remain in Sacramento working on legislation as they attempt to solve the budget. While many measures died this year due to the state’s economical woes, below is a summary of some of the measures that the CSU is tracking and in support of that are still moving and their status:

AB 2296 by Assembly Member Gene Mullin of South San Francisco would create a new trespassing misdemeanor against any person that enters the residential property of a researcher for the purpose of interfering with their academic freedom. More »

Election Year Report Candidate Visit Updates
As was mentioned in our previous issue of the Legislative Report, the Office of Advocacy and Institutional Relations will be providing a look at the first of over 30 legislative candidates up for election in November that Assistant Vice Chancellor Karen Zamarripa hopes to visit with in the course of the next few months. She will be working with local campus legislative and community relations colleagues to make these contacts and follow-ups with the candidates once elected.

The visits hope to establish a relationship between the CSU and the potential legislator early as well as raise awareness of the importance of higher education to the state and our economic future. More »

Noteworthy
November Ballot to Host Slew of Propositions
The upcoming state ballot, which is to go before California voters on November 4, hosts a higher than average list of propositions. Issues that range from energy to hospital bonds to a high-speed railway system and to the treatment of farm animals will be appearing for voter consideration. More »

Whitmore Takes the Reins at San Jose State
Mr. Jon Whitmore, who was selected from a distinguished group of candidates as the new President of San Jose State University, has begun his stint at the university as of August 1. More »
