Debrar S. FararDebra S. Farar, Chair, Board of Trustees, California State University

During her tenure as a CSU trustee, Dr. Debra S. Farar has served as a board member and vice chair and is currently chair. Farar’s background as an educational advisor, consultant, teacher and CSU Northridge alumna has prepared her to weigh the many decisions facing the CSU Board of Trustees. She presently serves as a board member of the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). Formerly, Farar was senior advisor for education policy in the state of California’s Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

Mr. Louis CalderaLouis Caldera, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, California State University

As vice chancellor for University Advancement of the 23-campus CSU system, Louis Caldera’s responsibilities include systemwide fundraising and development programs, legislative affairs, community relations, alumni affairs, public affairs and communications. Before his tenure at the CSU, Caldera held two appointed posts with the Clinton administration: Secretary of the Army (1998-2001) and Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service (1997-1998). Prior to that, Caldera served in the California State Assembly from 1992 to 1997, representing the 46th district in and around downtown Los Angeles.

Dr. William Boldt has supervised Cal Poly’s Advancement Program for the past eight years. Under his leadership, private support has increased from $11.6 million in 1994-95 to $44.3 million in 2001-2002. He has been the driving force in Cal Poly’s $250 million Centennial Campaign which is well ahead of schedule. Previously Boldt served as Assistant Dean for the College of Agriculture at Cornell University where he directed the College’s first comprehensive campaign which exceeded its $95 million goal by raising over $160 million.

Kyle Button oversees all advancement services at Cal State L.A. and is the current president of the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Previously, Button was development director and director of corporate and foundation relations at CSU, Long Beach. He also has served as a development associate for the California Institute of the Arts, a grants coordinator for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and a program development associate for the New York State Council on the Arts.

Judy Knudson is responsible for all advancement services at CSU Northridge. Under her leadership, voluntary support has nearly doubled. She was responsible for securing the largest gift ever given to the campus—a $7 million contribution from the Eisner Foundation. Formerly, Knudson was associate vice president for institutional advancement at Arizona State University where she was part of an executive team that oversaw a successful $400 million capital campaign. Prior to her work at the Tempe campus, Knudson was vice provost for institutional advancement for Arizona State University West in Phoenix.

Theresa Mendoza has primary responsibility for all advancement and development programs at San Diego State University, including the Campanile Foundation. She coordinated the successful fundraising operation that increased San Diego State’s voluntary support by 25 percent in 2001/2002, making it the first California State University campus to exceed $50 million in revenue. Mendoza previously served as executive vice president of the Arizona State University Foundation and campaign director for the Arizona State University Campaign for Leadership, a national campaign with a $300 million goal.

Freda Hinsche Otto manages development programs and support services for the CSU Chancellor’s Office with responsibility for data collection, policy and campus support. Previously, she served as administrator in charge of the Division of University Advancement, oversaw the CSU Alumni Council and coordinated statewide CSU events including Legislative Day. Her academic experience includes 10 years at the University of Southern California in development and alumni relations. Otto also played an integral role as executive vice president for major gifts at St. Mary Medical Center Foundation, raising $30 million in the 75th anniversary campaign.

Currently involved in the planning stages of the largest major comprehensive campaign in Fresno State history, Peter Smits is responsible for all advancement activities including fundraising, alumni affairs, public information, auxiliary organizations and the CSUF Foundation. Under Smiths's leadership at Fresno State, giving has consistently exceeded $20 million per year. Previously, Smits was vice president for institutional advancement at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he facilitated the largest donation presented to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
